If you are considering remodeling your bathroom, have a list of questions ready before you hire a contractor or sign on the line. Be particular with your questions and insist on specific answers. Any respected contractor will not just answer your inquiries, he or she will welcome them. We say that as contractors ourselves: the customers who ask us the most questions up front tend to be our happiest customers at the end.

Shopping around for the fixtures and finishes you want in your new bathroom is important, but shopping for the right fit between contractor and customer matters just as much. Here are the questions that separate the pros from the pretenders.

Are you licensed and insured?

This one has the most obvious logic behind it, yet you would be surprised how many people suffer an unfortunate incident because they skipped it. Verifying that a contractor is licensed and insured protects you on multiple levels. A license means someone takes their craft seriously enough to earn the credential that backs them up, and insurance gives you peace of mind if there is ever an accident on your property.

In Arizona, you can look a contractor’s license up yourself through the state registrar. Any legitimate contractor will hand over their license number without hesitation. If you get excuses instead of a number, keep looking.

How long have you been in business?

Do not be shy about asking for a contractor’s background. Ask how long they have been in business, whether it is family-owned and operated, and whether they can provide recommendations and referrals.

The more interaction you have with a contractor, the more you learn about them, and that interaction itself is a test. A contractor who is in too much of a rush to get started may be in just as much of a rush to get to the next job once yours is underway. You want someone who gives you undivided attention from the start.

Can I see your work?

Ask whether they have photographs of past projects. Any good contractor will be honored to show off their work. If they cannot or will not, there may be a reason, and you should find out what it is. Ask if they have a website where you can read comments from other customers, see pictures of finished jobs, and get a feel for who they are.

A bathroom remodel in particular is a craftsmanship showcase: tile lines, caulk beads, grout joints, and paint edges are all right there at eye level every morning. Past work tells you what your future bathroom will look like.

What are your warranties and guarantees?

Have a thorough conversation about the warranties and guarantees that come with your scope of work, and put the important answers in email. A written record of who said what, and when, prevents misunderstandings later. Do not be afraid to ask for extra warranty coverage as a first-time customer, either; the worst a contractor can say is no.

Ask what happens if something fails six months in. Ask whether the product warranties on fixtures get passed along to you. A contractor who stands behind the work will have ready answers.

When hiring a contractor, the more conversation and the more you get to know them, the better. Every question above is really the same question in different clothes: is this someone I trust inside my home?
