Bathroom Remodeling: His, Hers, or Both?
August 25, 2026
Remodeling your bathroom and tempted to hand your loved one a “honey-do” list of what you think it should look like? Maybe it is the master bathroom, and the two of you have very different pictures in your heads. One of you sees pink or lavender while the other sees rich mahogany. He is thinking powerful shower head; you are dreaming of an old-fashioned four-legged tub to sink your bones into at the end of a long day.
Take heart. There are several ways around the “his, hers, ours” bathroom dilemma, and after decades of remodeling shared bathrooms for East Valley couples, we can tell you the best solutions usually make both people happier than their original plan would have.
Start with a neutral backdrop
You can never go wrong with a white background for your bathroom. A white backdrop lets you change the personality of the room with accessories: towels, bath mats, shower curtains, artwork. When one of you gets tired of the look, you can splurge a little and change it up without touching a single tile.
That flexibility is worth real money. Repainting an accent or swapping towels costs almost nothing; re-tiling a shower because you both got sick of a bold color choice costs plenty. A neutral shell with changeable accents is the remodel that keeps on giving.
Antique white is another great neutral. It carries a bit more warmth than a pure white and still lets you mix and match without the room tipping too masculine or too feminine either way.
Take turns with the decor
Here is an arrangement that works surprisingly well: each of you gets your way with the bathroom for a stretch of time. Lavender towels look pretty nice against that white backdrop for a season. Later, deep chocolate-brown towels and accessories take their turn. During football season, maybe that shower curtain with his favorite team’s logo makes an appearance, along with a matching bath mat.
A little concession from both of you goes a long way in every room of the house, even the bathroom.
Split the difference on fixtures
As for the shower-head-versus-soaking-tub standoff, the art of the deal applies. Perhaps he gets his powerful shower head and you get a little whirlpool action instead of the four-legged tub. Keep a basket of goodies under the sink, and when it is your turn for a luxurious soak, bring out the facials, creams, and lotions and make the room your spa for the evening.
Fixture swaps like these are where a remodel earns its keep, and they ripple into the systems behind the wall. New shower valves and tub plumbing are plumbing work, a new vanity light or heated mirror is electrical work, and moving either one means drywall done right afterward. Plan them together and the project stays clean.
Give each person their own station
Separate his-and-hers mirrors are a great way to satisfy both needs. His can sit off to one side with his own sink underneath for shaving. Hers can be a small vanity in the corner for putting on makeup in the morning. Neither of you is in the other’s way, but you are still sharing the time and the space together.
If square footage allows, double sinks accomplish the same peace treaty. If it does not, staggered storage, one cabinet each, one drawer each, gets you most of the way there.
A little compromise goes a long way
As you can see, there are many creative ways to remodel and recreate a shared bathroom so it accommodates both his and her tastes. The couples who love their finished bathroom are the ones who designed it for both people who use it.
